South Leicestershire College Apprentices Going for Gold

Appeared in the Leicester Mercury Saturday 11th February 2012

To mark National Apprenticeship Week, four Engineering Apprentices at Preci-Spark showed SLC Principal Jim Aleander how it’s done when he went back to the floor as an Apprentice!

Daryl Felstead (17), Matt Fisher (19), Ryan Shaw (18) and Sam Blake (19) showcased their unique engineering skills that they have developed through their Apprenticeships and in the workplace at Preci-Spark in Loughborough.

Preci-Spark is a leading manufacturer of components for the jet aircraft, gas turbine and other advanced technology industries.  Whilst going back to the floor, Jim was able to learn about engineering and the high level of skills needed to work in this sector.

Daryl Felstead who is in his second year of his Advanced Engineering Apprenticeship said:

“Doing an Apprenticeship has prepared me for the workplace. The college has helped me to become more confident when using the machinery on my own and I am really enjoying what I do. I am a practical person, so learning on the job really suits me.  I want to continue to learn and get as much under my belt as I can.”

Jim Aleander said:

“It was a real pleasure to go back to the floor at Preci-Spark, it really is a motivational learning environment for our Apprentices. All Apprentices showed commitment to their learning and want to continue their studies in the engineering sector. In a speech earlier this week, the Prime Minister, David Cameron, called Apprenticeships like this “a gold standard option” for young ambitious people. These excellent Apprentices have struck gold with this opportunity to become a highly skilled engineer and provide a future career for themselves.”

National Apprenticeship Week is the perfect time to find out about the wide range of Apprenticeships on offer at South Leicestershire College (SLC). SLC actively works with you to find an Apprenticeship vacancy with the right employer. This help will give you the best opportunity for success in your chosen career.
