Functional Skills Learner Awards – Autumn Prize Winner: Lauren Newell

Lauren Newell, a first year Painting & Decorating student, has won the Autumn Prize for the Functional Skills Learner Awards. The competition was launched this year to make students aware of the importance of completing their functional skills alongside their qualification. To select a winner, Tutors throughout the college were asked to nominate Functional Skills students.

Tutor, Archie Brown, spoke highly of Lauren’s outstanding effort and willingness to contribute in class where she is an inspiration and mentor to other learners. Lauren’s commitment extends beyond the classroom as she is also the Student Parliament representative for Level 1 Painting & Decorating Students. In recognition of all these achievements, Lauren was chosen as the Autumn Prize Winner.

Lauren is pictured receiving her Prize of £20 Love2Shop vouchers from her Tutor, Archie Brown:

Lauren was “really surprised to get this award, and quite stunned as it was out of the whole college. If it wasn’t for the teachers, she wouldn’t be doing what she does now, as it was Archie who first encouraged her to take Painting & Decorating.”

Archie Brown confirmed it was a “pleasure to teach someone like Lauren who is keen to learn and puts the skills to good use. She is well ahead of her training schedule and totally deserves all the praise we can give her.”

There are 3 further prizes to be won by Functional Skills students and Alex Lindsay will be contacting all tutors again to receive their next nominations.

News Apprentice Jack Middleton_140212

Name: Jack Middleton

Age: 19

Apprenticeship Area: Aerospace Engineering

Employer: Cobham Advanced Composites Ltd
Cobham Antenna Systems, Shepshed, Leicester LE12 9NH

A leading aerospace engineering company that works with the industry’s prime contractors on aerospace and defence projects for Rolls Royce and both the UK & US Military (www.CobhamCareers.com).

The average salary for newly qualified engineers is well above most other sectors.

Jack left school during the second year of his A Levels to work in the catering industry but after being made redundant had to then find a new career path. As a friend was an engineering apprentice, Jack decided to look into this route for himself.

“The Apprenticeship was ideal as it provided the courses need to further myself in the engineering industry. Our training is geared towards what we are doing in the workplace and I enjoy learning the new skills required to be an engineer. Cobham works on exciting projects and there is a good mentoring system in place which is also a great help.

In the future, I hope to become a valued member of the company. I would advise other people thinking of Apprenticeships to go for it! It helps give you the knowledge and the experience to further your career.”
