CASE STUDY - Grant James

CASE STUDY - Grant James

The following CASE STUDY (Grant James) will feature in the Leicester Mercury, January 2012

Apprentice Studying at South Leicestershire College (SLC)

Name: Grant James

Age: 18

Apprenticeship Area: Aerospace Engineering (Composites)

Employer: Cobham Antenna Systems, Shepshed, Leicester LE12 9NH

A leading aerospace engineering company that works with the industry’s prime contractors on aerospace and defence projects for Rolls Royce and both the UK & US Military (www.CobhamCareers.com).

The average salary for newly qualified engineers is well above most other sectors.

Grant began studying for his Advanced Apprenticeship at SLC in September 2010 and is due to complete in December 2014. Before joining the scheme, Grant had been studying for A Levels but felt that this route wasn’t right for him. Not wanting to be out of work, he decided to look for an Apprenticeship as this would allow him to study whilst earning.

“I like the day to day challenges set by my employer and the fact that I’m pursuing my career. I would say that it is definitely a great decision to do an Apprenticeship as it gives you both the knowledge and experience to further your career.

Engineering is definitely the right area for me and I’m striving to get as far as possible within this industry and hopefully progress within the company.”
