BUILDING A NEW FUTURE AT COUNTESTHORPE CRICKET CLUB

In December, a team of SLC construction and carpentry students put their skills to charitable use at Countesthorpe Cricket Club by starting
to build a large extension to their changing rooms.
SLC undertook the project as part of the NatWest CricketForce scheme, who oversee the largest volunteer initiative in UK sport. The scheme relies on enthusiastic volunteers to donate time and materials to help improve the facilities at their local cricket clubs. Through their involvement with the scheme, SLC is able to build bridges with the local communities and provide opportunities for the learners to gain work based evidence.
The extension is expected to be completed in mid-February. These on-site projects allow the students to use and develop their skills in working environment which they find very rewarding. SLC student Eddie Warner, “liked the challenges by working on-site. This is excellent training which will help me progress into the construction industry.”
SLC received praise from Countesthorpe Cricket Club Secretary, Terry Swingler, who thanked the students for their hard work extending the changing rooms. “The quality of the students work is impressive and everyone at the Club is very appreciative for their support and volunteering their time".
The following CASE STUDY (Grant James) will feature in the Leicester Mercury, January 2012
Apprentice Studying at South Leicestershire College (SLC)

Name: Grant James
Age: 18
Apprenticeship Area: Aerospace Engineering (Composites)
Employer: Cobham Antenna Systems, Shepshed, Leicester LE12 9NH
A leading aerospace engineering company that works with the industry’s prime contractors on aerospace and defence projects for Rolls Royce and both the UK & US Military (www.CobhamCareers.com).
The average salary for newly qualified engineers is well above most other sectors.
Grant began studying for his Advanced Apprenticeship at SLC in September 2010 and is due to complete in December 2014. Before joining the scheme, Grant had been studying for A Levels but felt that this route wasn’t right for him. Not wanting to be out of work, he decided to look for an Apprenticeship as this would allow him to study whilst earning.
“I like the day to day challenges set by my employer and the fact that I’m pursuing my career. I would say that it is definitely a great decision to do an Apprenticeship as it gives you both the knowledge and experience to further your career.
Engineering is definitely the right area for me and I’m striving to get as far as possible within this industry and hopefully progress within the company.”
