Local students from South Leicestershire College competed in the Johnstone’s Trade Young Painter of the Year Competition last week.
Johnstone’s Trade hosted the Midlands heat of their competition at South Leicestershire College on Wednesday 23 May. The event saw eight local students, including five from the College, battle it out to be crowned regional winner. Other colleges taking part were Lincoln College and Barnfield College.
Competitors were tasked to complete an intricate drawing and painting test over the space of six hours.
Paul Thornewell, Lecturer in Construction at South Leicestershire College added: “These heats allow students of all abilities to access industry-led competitions and really test their skills against their peers. Although we didn’t see a winner this year, our students performed to an exceptionally high standard and we’re really proud of their performance.”
James Surtees from Johnstone’s Technical Department said: “These competitions are all about supporting the youth of the industry and protecting the future of painting and decorating. As a manufacturer it’s great to have the support of colleges, specifically South Leicestershire College, we wouldn’t be able to run these competitions without their help. We’re very grateful to Paul and his team for their support. Special thanks to the business partners who have sponsored the competitions and provided prizes.”
The event, which is in its 14th year, celebrates young painting and decorating talent across the UK has a total of eight regional finals.
