Gold medal haul for college students at national skills final

Students from North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College have triumphed at the national finals of the WorldSkills UK Inclusive Skills competition, winning Gold medals in the health and life sciences, and media categories.

Chelsea Hammond, who studies health and social care at the College’s Nuneaton campus, won Gold in the health and life sciences category. Creative digital media students Joe Taplin and Katie Macadam, based at the Hinckley campus, achieved the top spot in the media competition.

The competitions took place as part of The Skills Show at the NEC in Birmingham, the UK’s largest showcase for skills, careers and apprenticeships, on Saturday, 18 November 2017.

Inclusive Skills was designed to build links between colleges, and local and national businesses, to showcase the skills of young people with special educational needs and disabilities. The competition format was originated by North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College, under the banner of ‘Footsteps to the Future’, and then subsequently developed in partnership with Natspec, and Derwen College in Shropshire, to create the national Inclusive Skills platform.

In the healthcare competition, Chelsea was required to demonstrate her understanding of infection control by using the right personal protective equipment and hand-washing procedure in a timed, simulated exercise. 

Katie and Joe were tasked with recording a 15-minute radio package containing a selection of their favourite music including facts and stories about their chosen artists.

College Principal and CEO, Marion Plant OBE said: “Competitions are an excellent way of enabling students to practice real-world employability skills including performing under pressure, delivering to tight deadlines and being judged by employers against industry standards.

“Taking part in live activities inspires young people to get enthusiastic about their future career options. We are committed to the development of Inclusive Skills so that young people with special educational needs and disabilities have an equal opportunity to showcase their talents.

“We are delighted with Chelsea, Joe and Katie’s success and hope that they will be encouraged by their experiences to progress well in their future careers.”
