Shower of poppies marks remembrance at college campus

Tuesday 14th November 2017

Students at South Leicestershire College hosted a Service of Remembrance last Friday 10 November as part of a special event to honour those who have lost their lives in conflict.

Second year students on the Level 3 Public Services course organised the event which was held at the College’s Wigston campus as part of the National Festival of Remembrance.

A wreath was laid by college Principal and Chief Executive, Marion Plant OBE, and by student, Georgia Aldwinckle.

The ceremony, which has been staged at the campus for the past four years, was led by Carl Pickering, lecturer in Public Services and college chaplain, Stephen Blythe, supported by members of the Thurmaston Scout and Guide Band.

Formal proceedings included a bugle rendition of the ‘Last Post’ from the band’s musical director, Darren Green, and lead drummer, Lauren Pickering. College student Victor Velasquez Quinones was selected to bear the Queen’s Standard.

College customer service team leader, Jackie Branson, read the poem ‘In Flanders’ Fields’ by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae. Student readers Jack Jenkinson, Liam Williamson, Dean Stevens and Victoria Bottrill also read tributes to the fallen.

As the ‘Last Post’ was played, students scattered poppies made from tissue paper from the fourth floor of the campus building that drifted down through the atrium. College chaplain, Stephen Blythe, described the poppy shower as, ‘a powerful moment.’
