College marks Remembrance in a shower of poppies

Thursday 9th November 2017

Students at South Leicestershire College will host a Service of Remembrance on Friday 10 November as part of a special event to honour those who have lost their lives in conflict.

Second year students on the Level 3 Public Services course are organising the event which is due to be held at the College’s Wigston campus ahead of the National Festival of Remembrance on Sunday. Wreaths will be laid by college Principal and Chief Executive, Marion Plant OBE, and a representative from the Leicestershire Fire & Rescue Service.

The ceremony, which has been staged at the campus for the past four years, will be led by Carl Pickering, lecturer in Public Services and college chaplain, Stephen Blythe, supported by members of the Thurmaston Scout and Guide Band.

Formal proceedings will include a bugle rendition of the ‘Last Post’ from the band’s musical director, Darren Green, and lead drummer, Lauren Pickering. A college student will be selected to bear the Queen’s Standard.

As the ‘Last Post’ is played, students will scatter poppies from the fourth floor of the campus building that will drift down through the atrium. At the end of the First World War, the poppy was adopted as a symbol of remembrance after Canadian doctor, Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae was inspired to write the poem, ‘In Flanders Fields’ when he noticed the flowers growing on the battlefield.

The event takes place at the Blaby Road campus from 10.45am on Friday, 10 November 2017.
