In 2017, employment in construction will reach just over 2.6 million, its highest point since the recession. As a result a number of trades will be in demand, including: wood trades and interior fit out.
So how can local businesses ensure they have the trained staff needed to meet this demand?
Tim Forster, Learning and Skills Manager for Built Environment at South Leicestershire College talks about their Apprenticeship offer:
“Skilled carpenters develop from practical, on-site experience, knowing how to work to deadlines, deal with customers and think on their feet when problems come up.
“This is why Apprenticeships are such a popular training option – by training on site, Apprentices not only learn their trade, but also develop relationships with colleagues and customers and learn the way of the business.
“Our Carpentry and Joinery Apprenticeships cover site operation, roofing, health and safety and communication to ensure Apprentices are at the top of their game by the end of their qualification.
“Fitted furniture is another specialist industry that needs skilled staff. We provide an Apprenticeship at Level 2 that covers health and safety, structures, building knowledge and construction technology.
“For those days when Apprentices complete off-site training, they will be based at our Training Centre located in Harrowbrook Industrial Estate, Hinckley, home to carpentry and construction workshops.”
