Access to Higher Education programmes

Tuesday 12th September 2017

Access courses are ideal if you want a career change and need to return to education to study at degree level but do not have the formal qualifications or experience needed. The qualification is widely recognised by UK universities and provides entry onto degree programmes.

What’s available?

Career paths include:

  • Health Studies: nursing, midwifery, paramedics and physiotherapy
  • Humanities: teaching, script writing, journalism, media, marketing and PR.
  • Social Science: social work, criminal justice, management and administration, probation officer and charity fundraiser

The benefits

  • Classroom sessions and a dedicated tutor will mean you have one-on-one support throughout your course.
  • No upper age limit
  • Most courses can be completed within a year
  • You will leave feeling confident and prepared to start a degree course.

Advanced Learner Loans available:

If you are aged 19 years and over and are looking to study on one of our Access pathways, you can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan to cover the cost of tuition fees. Advanced Learner Loans don’t depend on your income, there are no credit checks and you do not pay the loan back if you successfully complete your degree.

Don’t just take our word for it!

Amanda Diboll, a mature student, studied the Access to Higher Education: Humanities course.

Amanda has now been offered a place to study a three-year undergraduate course in History at the University of Leicester, starting September 2017.

Amanda tells us about her experience:

“Everything about the course was excellent and highly enjoyable. I found each subject fascinating and it was quite a job to choose the subject I wanted to pursue further.

“The course is intended to prepare students to enter Higher Education and the assignments we were asked to complete were moving us ever forward towards university standards. I had not written an academic essay for many years and, at first, I did find it a little daunting. However, although I faltered a little at the start, through the excellent teaching and encouragement on the part of each of my tutors, I persevered.

“The inclusion of Academic Studies helps to prepare students in planning and researching each assignment and it also teaches you how to reference your research. You are also supported and guided, through the UCAS process, by an assigned tutor and by Christmas we had written our personal statements and made our five choices of university and courses.

“I began the course not entirely sure I was up to the task, but by the end my confidence in my ability had soared and I am now really looking forward to studying at university.

“I was delighted to discover that I was eligible for a Student Loan having not studied at this level before. There is no upper age limit for older students. Therefore, Student Finance has paid for the Access Course and if I complete my BA this part of the loan will be written off.

Advice to anyone considering an Access course:

“Go for it! You really won’t regret it. I have had so much fun, the camaraderie with the other students has been amazing, my confidence has grown and the sense of achievement is phenomenal. I only wish I had done it earlier!”
