As part of their programme, all Apprentices are required to complete 20% off-the-job training.
What defines this training and how can businesses ensure they are meeting these requirements?
Debbie Scotton, Business Development Manager at South Leicestershire College discusses the key points.
“A Government report released at the end of June outlines the requirements for at least 20% off-the-job training for every Apprenticeship. The aim is to reinforce ‘practical, work-based learning with theoretical learning’.
“To begin with, it’s important to define what is meant by off-the job training. This is: learning undertaken outside of the normal day-to-day working environment and leads towards the achievement of the Apprenticeship.
This can include:
“Training can take place at the place of work but must not be part of normal working duties. It also applies to current frameworks and the new standards.
“Another key point is that this training must be separate to English and maths training and progress reviews/assessments.
“It is the responsibility of the employer and the main training provider to ensure this 20% is met.
Training providers, including ourselves, can deliver all off-the-job training as part of the agreed cost for Apprenticeship training. Employers may also choose to undertake off-the-job training in-house.”
“As a training provider we are working with small, medium and large employers across a wide range of sectors to deliver Apprenticeship training programmes. We will work with you to design a training plan to meet the specific needs of your organisation, including the arrangement of the 20% of-the-job-training.”
