Apprenticeships: meeting the public sector target

Wednesday 31st May 2017

With the Apprenticeship levy officially launched and new standards gradually being approved, the reforms are now in full swing.

A part of these reforms, all public sector organisations are now required to employ 2.3% of their workforce as Apprentices. Debbie Scotton, Business Development Manager at South Leicestershire College discusses the target, what the impact will be for public sector organisations and how the College help them to meet this target:

“This target is part of the Government’s pledge to create 3 million Apprenticeship starts by 2020, whereby they hope that the public sector can act as a model employer. With a few exceptions, this target will apply to all public bodies in England who have 250 or more staff. This includes schools, local authorities, central government, NHS organisations, the armed forces and the emergency services.

“These organisations will be required to use Apprenticeships as part of their training strategy, either as a way to recruit new staff members or upskill current employees. They will be required to complete an Apprenticeship Activity return in order to demonstrate their work towards this target.

“As a College group who is also required to meet this target, we can provide specialist support to public sector organisations.

“If you have an annual PAYE bill of more than £3million and pay into the levy, we can help you to make the most of your funds:

  • Working with you to identify skills gaps within your organisation
  • Using the Apprenticeship route to upskill your existing staff (no age restrictions)
  • Identifying relevant Apprenticeships  that meet your business needs
  • Signposting to the services you need to know about – including your digital Apprenticeship Account
  • Helping recruit new Apprentices, supported by our free recruitment service

North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College is listed on the Register of Apprenticeship Training Providers (RoATP) as a ‘main provider’ of Apprenticeships. We are also graded Good by Ofsted.
