Introducing T-Levels: what will this mean for post-16 education?

Wednesday 15th March 2017

This week, Chancellor Phillip Hammond set out proposals for new T-Levels – a move that is set to be ‘one of the most ambitious reforms for post-16 education since the introduction of A Levels 70 years ago, (FE WEEK 2017).

Marion Plant OBE, Principal and Chief Executive of North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College discusses:

“T-levels will be Level 3 technical qualifications for 16-19 year olds. The qualifications will be split into 15 technical routes and developed and phased in between 2018 and 2022.

“During this week’s budget the Government stated that the teaching hours for these qualifications would increase from the current 600 for vocational qualifications to 900 with a £500m investment by 2022.”

“As a result, school leavers will now have clear pathways: the academic A Level route, the vocational T-Level route or the work-based Apprenticeship route.

“The aim is for vocational qualifications to have an equal footing to academic pathways, developing and reinforcing their position as an effective and respected career option.

“With almost a 50% increase in the number of hours that will be funded for vocational learning, this is a great move for further education. As a College group we are constantly working to ensure each student is fully prepared with the knowledge, skills and experience they need to pursue a successful career. We hope these reforms will simplify vocational training within the UK, allow young people to make an informed choice about their next steps and positively impact the economy as a whole.”
