Debbie Scotton, Business Development Manager at South Leicestershire College discusses the importance of quality in light of the upcoming Apprenticeship reforms.
“The government’s pledge to create 3 million more Apprenticeships by 2020 is well underway. With frameworks already being phased out, new standards being approved and the levy coming into force in April next year, the strategy aims to address skills shortages and drive productivity and national prosperity. However, in the rush to create the 3 million, we need to ensure we don’t leave quality behind.
“A new report published by think tank Policy Exchange states that the Apprenticeships programme ‘will not deliver its full potential unless a greater focus is placed on improving the quality of all Apprenticeships’. The report calls for the introduction of a new high level quality target and for the Institute for Apprenticeships to become the guarantor of quality.
“As a training provider, we couldn’t agree more. It is essential that Apprenticeships create tangible benefits for the learner in terms of career prospects and for the employer in terms of filling skills gaps and developing a talented and long standing workforce.
“It is the job for training providers, the government and employers to strike this balance between creating a number of new standards that lead to skilled job roles.
“Here at South Leicestershire College we aim to work in close partnership with employers to ensure these quality standards are met and maintained throughout the important reforms. As a training provider we can take employers through the transition from frameworks to standards and how we can work with them on an individual basis to ensure each Apprenticeship leads to a positive destination.”
