RAF veteran marks Remembrance Day with local college

Saturday 12th November 2016

Decorated World War II veteran Jack Beales attended North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College’s annual Remembrance Day Service (Armistice Day).

The annual service took place at the College’s South Wigston Campus on Friday 11 November and was organised by students and staff from the Public Services Department.

Former Flight Lieutenant Beales, 92, was an RAF Spitfire pilot between 1942 and 1947. After being shot in action, he was presumed dead, however, three months later, he wrote to his mother from his hospital bed and they realised he was still alive.

Following his service in the RAF he was presented with gold braids, which are now stitched intohis uniform, as a recognition of the fact that he was shot in action.

The service saw students and staff gather for readings, before wreaths were laid by Jack Beales, Marion Plant OBE, Principal and Chief Executive of North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College, Sergeant Danny Graham from the Leicestershire Police and students from the Public Services course.

After the service Jack said: “I enjoyed today’s experience and feel honoured to have attended.”

Marion Plant OBE, Principal and Chief Executive at the College said: “We feel very privileged to have been joined by Jack Beales today. Thank you to him and thank you to the Public Services Department for organising such a special event to remember our service men and women who have been injured or have lost their lives in conflict.”
