Results day: an exciting, scary and often overwhelming time for young people and parents alike. With so many pathways available for post-GCSE education, how do young people know which one is best for them?
Marion Plant, OBE, FCGI, Principal and Chief Executive at South Leicestershire College discusses.
Know the options
“A Levels are a great option for many young people but one size does not fit all when it comes to gaining qualifications. Vocational programmes are a fantastic alternative, whether students want to go straight into further training, full-time employment or, contrary to many people’s beliefs, to university. BTECs for example are equivalent to three A Levels, offering just as many UCAS points.”
“Here at South Leicestershire College, our vocational programmes cover a huge range of sectors from Engineering, Business, Hairdressing and Travel & Tourism to name a few. Our aim is to not only equip young people with their qualifications but also the work ready skills they need to confidently pursue their dream career.”
“Apprenticeships are another great option, allowing learners to work as a paid employee whilst working towards a nationally recognised qualification. The key benefit of this type of learning is that Apprentices are fully equipped for the world of work, developing those softer skills that employers are looking for such as communication, team work and accountability.”
What if they didn’t get the results they hoped for?
“Our first piece of advice –don’t panic. Each applicant at the College receives an assessment so we can ensure they are on the correct level course, so no matter what a student’s starting point, regardless of their results, we’ll ensure they find a course to suit them.”
The College is holding advice days for those receiving their GCSE results to find out about full-time courses and Apprenticeships starting from this September. They will take place at South Leicestershire College, Blaby Road, South Wigston, LE18 4PH, Thursday 25 August and Friday 26 August 9.00am to 4.00pm.
