National award for College team

Thursday 14th April 2016

South Leicestershire College has won a national award for the process of managing the safety of students whilst on off-site College visits, making it easier for teachers to manage health and safety risks.

The in-house team has won the Association of Colleges (AOC) Health and Safety Champion Award for the ‘Trips and Visits System’, in-house interactive, web-based Management System with the aim of encouraging and facilitating educational visits.

The system works to enrich the students’ learning experience, whilst ensuring robust Health and Safety and safeguarding management controls are in place on educational trips.

The H&S team worked closely with the College’s E-Services team to develop the system.

Andrew Baines, Health and Safety Manager at SLC, said:

“Trips and visits are a vital part of the student experience we offer. However, the process to ensure trips and visits are well-organised can be complicated and time consuming, with many opportunities for mistakes to occur.

“The Trips and Visits System guides users through a simple, but comprehensive trip planning process which enables College staff to plan educational visits and gain authorisation with simple, quick and easy steps.”

The SLC team have also been asked to host a workshop at the AOC National Health and Safety Conference in Nottingham in May to demonstrate the system to other colleges.
