Student Success

Thursday 7th May 2015

Amy LeggetA student from South Leicestershire College (SLC) has won a major industry award in recognition of her academic achievements.

Graduate Amy Leggett, who has juggled her studies at SLC with her full-time role at engineering firm Babcock International Group, since 2012, scooped the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) Student of the Year for 2015 at a ceremony at Freeth’s Solicitors in Leicester last week.

The CIPD is the professional body for human resources and people development, and each year the organisation recognises students who have excelled at CIPD accredited qualifications, with all candidates nominated by their lecturers at their respective colleges.

Amy was nominated from a group of 33 students studying at SLC and was judged on criteria including her commitment to studies, personal and professional development and her progression throughout the learning journey.

Over the past three years, Amy has gained a number of qualifications in her studies at SLC. Beginning with a CIPD level 3 foundation certificate in HR practice in 2012, leading to a CIPD level 5 intermediate certificate in HR management in 2013. She is currently working towards a CIPD level 5 diploma in HR management at the college.

Commenting on her award, Amy said: “The key to life is happiness” said to me by my late Nanna, Mrs Brenda Leggett. Statistically we spend around a third of our adult life working, which is why it is so important to try and be as content as possible in work. In 2012 I made a decision to study towards the CIPD qualification at South Leicestershire College, following several years working in a HR Support role. Little did I realise at the time how much this would enhance my career and help me grow as a person with some real direction; but most importantly just how much it would help find that key to life.”

Elaine Wood, Human Resources Lecturer at SLC, who nominated Amy for the award commented: “Amy is a dedicated student who has demonstrated excellent levels of personal motivation and completed all independent learning and work in advance of others in the group. As a result of her CIPD studies, she has increased responsibility in her job role and has pushed her personal boundaries through undertaking a detailed self-reflection of her learning journey, which she believes has grown her as a person, as well as a professional. She is an example to us all and I am delighted her efforts have been recognised by the CIPD.”

Amy concluded:

“For the first time in my working life, the future of my career is in my hands.

"With all that I have learnt over the past two years in college, from other HR Professionals and about myself, my path has started to take different turns and there are many more to come. I feel like I have come so far as a person and a HR professional.”
