Students Have Light Bulb Moment

Sunday 15th March 2015

Route to Work and EngineeringStudents at South Leicestershire College had the chance to take part in a workshop with a difference last month.

Entry 3 learners on the Route to Work programme were taken to the College’s Engineering workshop instead of their usual ICT lesson. During the session, they had the chance to wire a plug and attach a light fitting and bulb, using the tools provided. The final step being to test their work to see if they could achieve that ‘light bulb moment’.

Nathan Nealon, Programme Area Leader for Foundation Studies says: “Many of the learners taking part in the workshop have difficulties, so the change in lesson plan was a big step for them.

“Although nervous, the group had a fantastic time, and were supported by tutors and a number of students, who mentored each member of the group, so that they felt confident and comfortable throughout. This was a great chance for the students to discover something new and try their hand at something really practical.”

Entry Studies courses such as the Route to Work and Diploma in Personal Progress are aimed at students with learning difficulties, disabilities or emotional and social issues and can also help people who wish to enter Further Education but may not have the relevant qualifications to do so. They can help students to build confidence and develop personal and social skills as well as work on their independence and personal employability skills.
