Enterprise will be core skill for the decade says College Principal

The ability to be enterprising will become as important a skill as English and maths.

That’s the message from Marion Plant OBE, Principal and Chief Executive of South Leicestershire College.

“It’s clear that English and maths will continue to be core skills for every young person. No organisation can survive unless their employees are highly skilled in both. And there’s hardly a sphere of our lives where we can manage without them. But as the growth in self-employment has shown, enterprise is alive and well in the UK”, said Marion Plant.

The number of workers described as “self-employed” has risen to its highest in 40 years, according to the Office for National Statistics.

Now roughly 4.6m people work for themselves in the UK. That’s 15% of the total numbers employed.

“Being self-employed is not a simple matter. It involves self-reliance, an understanding of the market, self-confidence and the ability to cope with repeated failures. Some of the UK’s most successful entrepreneurs have had to overcome massive business failures. But it has been their ability to pick themselves up, learn from their mistakes and start over that has marked them out.

We bring business people into college to talk about what makes businesses work. But we won’t pretend to have all of the answers. I’m confident that our students will find solutions to some of the challenges we face – that’s what enterprising people do.”
