College students take inspiration from professional darts player

South Leicestershire College hosted a Child Care Competition this week, welcoming special guest Jamie Caven.

The event was held at the College’s South Wigston Campus on Monday 22 May and saw a total of 8 students from four Colleges compete.

Students from North Warwickshire & South Leicestershire College, Leicester College, Bath College and South City College Birmingham were tasked to create engaging displays for primary school classes and also competed in role play scenarios.

Leicester-born professional darts player Jamie Caven attended on the day, presenting awards to the winners and delivering an inspirational speech to the students.

Despite suffering illness early on in life, including losing the sight in one eye, Jamie has won 7 events on the Professional Darts Corporation pro tour and was also a youth champion when he was 17.

Jamie said: “Competitions aren’t necessarily about winning, they are about using your energy in a constructive way and the importance of believing in yourself.”

The winner on the day was Olivia Deeming who added: “I was here today as I wanted to get Childcare noticed. I feel passionate about the subject and really want it to be represented in the WorldSkills competitions.”

Stephanie Panter, Childcare Trainer and Assessor at the College said: “Congratulations to all students who took part in the competitions. The standard on the day was exceptionally high.

“We’d like to say a massive thank you to Jamie for joining us on the day. Jamie is a competitor and an inspiration and has achieved so much throughout his career.

“Here at the College, competitions are such an important part of the students’ study programme. Competition to these learners isn’t just about winning – it’s about taking part. The energy it takes to be involved, the team work, the people they come across, the challenges they overcome and the importance in believing in themselves and having the enthusiasm and drive to want to be involved.”
