Employing an Apprentice: 4 key steps

The Apprenticeship reforms are fast approaching and they’ll impact businesses of all sizes, regardless of whether or not they are going to pay into the levy.

Debbie Scotton, Business Development Manager at South Leciestershire College discusses the first steps for those businesses who haven’t yet employed an Apprentice.

“The reforms are going to create huge changes to the Apprenticeship landscape, with employers having much more of an influence over the training of their staff members, both current and new.

“Following the introduction of the reforms, many businesses who may not have employed an Apprentice before will now be looking at this as a training option. For those new to the process, the .gov website have set out key steps to taking on an Apprentice:

1. Choose an apprenticeships framework or standard for an apprenticeship in your industry and at a suitable level.

“Frameworks are being gradually phased out as the new employer-created standards are introduced. Employers will be able to select the most relevant one for their training needs and organisation.”

2. Find a training organisation that offers apprenticeships for your industry - they’ll handle your apprentice’s training, qualification and assessment.

“You will select a provider from the RoATP: Register of Approved Training Providers.”

“For those not paying into the levy (if your payroll bill is under £3 million) you will pay 10% and the government will co-invest 90%. For all employers, a £1,000 grant is available if your Apprentices is aged 16-18 or is a care leaver/has a healthcare plan.

3. Advertise your apprenticeship

“As a training provider we can support you to recruit a new employee. Our free recruitment service will support you to advertise your vacancy, shortlist applicants as well as complete an assessment and formal interview

4. Select your apprentice and negotiate an apprenticeship agreement with them

“This will ensure you see tangible results from your training programme and the Apprentice successfully progresses in their career.”
