The newly merged North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College held their annual Celebration of Student Success Award Ceremony last week.

The event took place at the Athena in Leicester on Tuesday 29 November and celebrated the success of students’ from North Warwickshire & Hinckley College and South Leicestershire College in the last academic year.

The night included a graduation ceremony for those who completed a Higher Education course this year awards as well as a ceremony for those who excelled during their further education course. Awards included the 14-16 Rising Star, Student of the Year and Apprentice of the Year for a range of subjects, Adult Learner of the Year, Competition Squad Star Winner, Bright Star Award and Principal’s Prize Student of the Year.

Among the winners was Mason Churcher who received the 16-18 Student of the Year Award. Mason studied the Level 2 Brickwork course at South Leicestershire College and was nominated by his Lecturer Alan Creighton: “When Mason first arrived at South Leicestershire College in 2013 he had just left school with no GCSEs and a bad experience of learning. He was enrolled onto our Route to Construction programme, finishing first in his group. Mason then progressed onto the Level 1 Brickwork also finishing top of his class with many distinctions attached to his work.

“During the summer, using the skills he gained in construction, Mason volunteered at a local training centre helping younger learners that have been either expelled or suspended from school to gain confidence and help improve their attitude towards education, drawing on his own experiences. Mason is currently enrolled on our level 2 programme in Brickwork and also level 2 in his English and Math and shows the same attitude and determination to complete his programme that he has shown over the last 2 years.”
