With many employers stating that young people lack the soft skills needed in the workplace, we take a look at how Apprenticeships are bridging the gap between education and employment and helping young people to pursue their dream career.
Leigha Taylor aged 20 from Countesthorpe studied A Levels in Psychology and Health & Social Care but decided the university route wasn’t for her. Leigha progressed to an Apprenticeship in Children and Young Person’s Workforce instead, working at NEXT Steps Nursery, located at the retailer’s head office in Enderby. After completing her Apprenticeship in February this year, Leigha was then offered a full-time position at the nursery.
When asked about her Apprenticeship, Leigha said: “I wanted to do an apprenticeship rather than go to university as I like earning a wage while learning. I love working with children and really enjoy watching them develop and learn new things. It’s so rewarding to see all the children engage and have fun!
“I would definitely recommend an Apprenticeship to anyone. I love the environment I work in and it’s a great way to gain qualifications while still being independent. I’d eventually like to complete a degree and become an early year’s teacher.”
Debbie Scotton, Business Development Manager at South Leicestershire College added: “Apprenticeships really are an effective way to kick start your career. By combining nationally recognised qualifications with real work experience, learners are fully prepared to confidently step into the work place, equipped with the softer skills that can only be acquired from genuine work experience.”
