How people rise to the top of their career is changing. Gone are the days when university was seen as the only way to land a well-paid, rewarding job. Apprenticeships are gradually shaking off the “poor relation” stigma and cementing their position, alongside university-level study, as a direct route to a glittering career.
Tom Richings is the perfect example. Aged just 20, Tom has completed a Commercial Apprenticeship with Triumph Motorcycles Ltd and South Leicestershire College. He now has a full-time role in Project Management Planning in the company’s Parts, Clothing and Accessories Department. As part of his role, Tom has travelled to France, Italy, Portugal and Germany – a recent project involved him selling old stock to 16 markets in 43 different countries.
After completing his A Levels, Tom decided to avoid spiralling university fees and opted for the Apprenticeship route instead:
“Doing an Apprenticeship was 100% the right decision for me. It has helped massively, especially in terms of developing life skills. Here at Triumph you are given a lot of responsibility- what you do as part of your role affects the business on a massive scale.
“There is nothing more important than experience and an Apprenticeship really helps you to gain that.”
Debbie Scotton, Business Development Manager at South Leicestershire College said: “Tom is just one example of how Apprenticeships really are an effective way to kick start your career. By combining nationally recognised qualifications with real work experience, learners are fully prepared to confidently step into the work place, equipped with the softer skills that can only be acquired from genuine work experience.”
South Leicestershire College currently offers Apprenticeships in a range of industries from Logistics and Engineering to Adult Social Care to Digital Media. Click here to find out more about Apprenticeships, call 0116 264 3535 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
