Students receiving their GCSE results today are being urged to consider South Leicestershire College (SLC) for their next step.
The college still has places available on a wide range of full-time courses and Apprenticeships starting in September, and their advisers will be on hand to help students who are uncertain about their next steps.
The jump from school to college can be daunting for so many young people, just as it was for Emily Neale.
Emily will be going into her second year of the BTEC Level 3 Business Studies course in September. After doing a work experience placement at school she realised that working in a childcare environment was not the right route for her. She liked office work and decided to apply to SLC for a BTEC in Business Studies. She has enjoyed a successful first year of the course and is looking forward to completing her second year. Earlier this year, she was part of a team who won first prize at the ‘Entrepreneurs of the Future’ competition organised by the Colleges-University of Leicester Network (CULN).
Emily says: “Going to college was a really big step for me after my GCSEs, and I’m really glad I chose SLC. The staff are friendly and supportive and really help me to be the best that I can be. My course is brilliant and after my Level 3 BTEC, I am hoping to stay on at SLC to complete a HND in Business Studies and progress to a career in management.”
The BTEC qualification route is ideal for those that may have a particular subject area that they have an interest in. The structured courses provide students with the specialist knowledge and skills to progress to university or into full-time employment. SLC offers BTEC courses in a range of subject areas and at various levels, ranging from business and beauty therapy to media, public services and travel and tourism.
The Apprenticeship route provides opportunities for students to gain qualifications while in full-time employment. Many vacancies are available to eligible individuals with local and regional employers who work with the College and are committed to developing highly skilled and professional apprentices. Apply for Apprenticeship vacancies through the National Apprenticeship Service website: www.apprenticeships.gov.uk.
