VQ Day Activities at South Leicestershire College

Women in Engineering & Construction 2014Taking up the VQ Day challenge, South Leicestershire College hosted 'Have a Go' Activities in Engineering and Construction. Open only to women, the taster sessions allowed them to take part in activities central to these two industries to hopefully encourage more women to enter these professions in the future.

This May, a group of 15 Year 9 female students from Fullhurst Community College in Leicester took part in one of our sessions. After donning their protective clothing the group were introduced to the workshops where, after some initial reservations, they were happily seen using files, drills and hammers to make their own floating metal shelves. Next on the agenda was learning painting and decorating skills. Each girl was given an 8ft board to scale up a design using tape measures, spirit levels and rulers before then painting this in with careful precision. Some of the girls particularly showed some natural talent and creative flair in this area.

The girls enthusiasm was endless and we struggled to get them to put down their tools at the end of the day. The feedback received from the group confirmed the event had been a great success with all keen to repeat the experience again next year.

If your school is interested in taking part in next year's Women in Engineering and Construction activities, then please contact angela.baxter@slcollege.ac.uk or call 0116 264 3515.
