Macauley Laywood - Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport
18 year old sports student, Macauley Laywood, has been playing football since he was 4 when he started playing in Junior Football Leagues. This was not unusual for his family who have a background of talented football players. Naturally, this led Macauley to start thinking about sport as a potential career for himself after finishing school.
“I wanted to enrol on a sports course and chose SLC as my older brother came here and I’d heard great reviews. After I’ve completed my course I hope to go to America and study Sports Management.”
US colleges are looking for gifted sportsmen with proven academic skills but require all candidates for their scholarship programme to pass an entrance exam, which is equivalent to A Levels in English and maths.
After successfully passing his entrance exam, Macauley has so far “Received football scholarship offers from 12 US colleges, including a fantastic offer from Salem University in West Virginia who are much better footballing wise, so it would be great to join a college playing football at that level. The majority of offers I’ve received have been 100%, which includes all my tuition, accommodation and food.”
Through the American scholarship system Macauley will be investing in his future, “I’ve chosen to study in the US rather than at home as I believe this will give me more opportunities. In the UK, the Academy entrance criteria is far stricter and seems to have fewer athletes who go on to win professional contracts. All being well, at a US college, I will be trained to compete in college football and leave with a degree ensuring I’ve got a back-up plan for the future.”
The next stage now for Macauley is Skype interviews with coaches from the colleges that he is keen on. He has to make a final decision by May and then will go out to his chosen college in the US by the last week in July to start his pre-season training.
We will catch up with Macauley later this month to find out which offer he has decided to accept.
