IntroductionThis qualification gives learners the opportunity to develop wider sector-related knowledge to underpin occupational competence in the role of the Healthcare Support worker (HCSW). HCSW's could be working in a range of settings which may include; hospitals, community clinics or health centres, individual homes, nursing/care homes, hospices, mental health settings or GP surgeries. Within your role you would be expected to work as part of a team, providing compassionate and high quality care to individuals. You will carry out in practice, well defined routines in clinical duties, checking and monitoring conditions, overall progress, wellbeing and comfort. Non clinical aspects will also be part of your duties, depending on where you work and could include aspects such as recording keeping, making beds, tidying up areas, returning and clearing equipment. You will report to a registered Healthcare practitioner who will directly or indirectly supervise you work.
Study OutlineThis includes knowledge and understanding of the requirements of personal centered care,safeguarding and protection in care settings, infection prevention, health and safety, equality and inclusions, communication, the role of the health and social care worker. You will always act in the limits of you competence, knowing who to refer to; to obtain help and support if unsure; following agreed ways of working to the relevant standards, polices, procedures and protocols outlined in the workplace. This includes the Code of conduct for Healthcare support workers and Adult Social care. During the first part of the apprenticeship programme the Care certificate will form part off your induction and support understanding of the fundamental skills required to provide quality care.
Entry RequirementsFormal entry requirements for the Level 2 Clinical Healthcare Support would be assessed within initial assessments and expectations would be that English and Math's results would be at Entry Level 3 at least to be taken on to undertake this study programme.
EquipmentThe equipment required to complete the Apprenticeship standard would be outlined by the employer and assessor dependent on the provision undertaking the qualification within.
Attendance for functional skills components of the standard requirements would be undertaken at the NHS trust provision within four week block sessions.
AttendanceLearners would attend monthly workshops to give them the opportunity to develop wider sector-related knowledge to underpin occupational competence in the role of a HealthCare support worker. An individual assessor would be allocated to assess occupational competencies via observing in the workplace, these appointments would be individualised and set directly with the learner.
AssessmentAs the Level 2 Diploma in Clinical Healthcare Support qualification requires confirmation of occupational competency. The learner will be allocated an assessor, as will be observed in the work place. A portfolio of evidence is also required; where assignments and reflective practice will be required. The care certificate will be undertaken by the employer and the learner will be assessed against the fifteen standards. The two aspects of the functional skills will be delivered within the workplace provision through a support platform of BKSB and varying resources to support the individuals learning style, which will lead to exams to complete these overall components. ProgressionIt is anticipated that learners will progress to the Level 3 Senior Healthcare Support Worker(SHCSW)which offers the sector based specialisms in one of the
following six areas: adult support worker, theatre support worker, mental health support worker, maternity support worker, children and young people support worker, allied health (therapy) support worker.
