IntroductionDuring the programme learners will focus on the skills needed to help them progress as an individual, develop skills for work and life, have a greater sense of independence and self-confidence.

It is expected that you would undertake some work experience as part of the course, this is usually in the form of voluntary projects coordinated by the tutors.

We offer one to one sessions for students, parents and support workers at the college so that all parties can see what the college can offer and discuss suitable study programmes tailored to the students specific needs.
Study OutlineYou will do lots of practical work and will cover lots of different skills including:
The course will cover the following topics:

Independent living skills
Meal planning, shopping and cooking a meal
Accessing the local community and travel
Solving problems, making choices and being safe

Included in the programme as functional skills Maths, English and ICT and an opportunity to experience vocational subjects and an enrichment activity.

Due to the range of options available within this qualification this course can be tailored to suit learner’s needs and abilities. Our highly qualified teaching staff also provide excellent pastoral support and advice and work closely with the college's support team.
Entry RequirementsThere are no formal entry requirements for this course of study.
EquipmentYou may need different equipment depending on aspects of the study programme. For example, if working in the Construction Department you will need safety boots.

As a general guide; please bring in the following: Dictionary/smartphone Pencil case with pens, pencil, highlighter etc Note pad A4 pad of lined paper Ring binder folder
AttendanceAttendance on Study Programmers is usually timetabled as three to four days a week.

You may be expected to attend additional times and days for work experience, and so will need to be flexible.
AssessmentYou will be assessed throughout the year using your portfolio of evidence and tests.

There is an online exam which assesses the Health and Safety aspect of the course.

Whilst taking one of our full-time courses you will also complete a programme of Functional Skills which could comprise of a combination of English, Maths and ICT. These Functional Skills are an essential requirement for employment progression, higher education and other further education courses.
ProgressionOnce you have completed this course, you will be able to go onto study the Level 2 Engineering or progress onto a Level 2 Apprenticeship, where you will develop your skills further and then be ready to go and work in the industry.
QualificationWe offer a selection of OCN West Midlands qualifications in addition to Functional Skills and Progression Unit qualifications. Diploma in Living Independently Diploma in Developing Employability Skills
