IntroductionThe level 3 National Foundation Diploma is a one year course which provides high quality preparation for progression on to the full Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care, an apprenticeship or employment. This qualification is equivalent to 1.5 A levels and upon successful completion learners can progress onto the second year of the course to gain the BTEC Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care (equivalent to 3 A Levels) allowing you to progress into a range of Higher Education courses such as Nursing, Midwifery, Social Work, Psychology etc.
Study OutlineYou will study a range of mandatory units (Human Development, Working in Health and Social Care, Meeting Individual Care and Support Needs and Principles of Safe Practice in Health and Social Care) and optional units including Work Experience in Health and Social Care. As part of this course you will complete 100 hours work experience in a range of suitable health and social care settings.
Entry RequirementsAged 16+ with a minimum of: Four GCSE grades A-C (or 9-4) including English Language. Alternatively, you will have a Level 2 Diploma in Health & Social Care with Merit grade or above including your English Language GCSE.

All students are required to have an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check (DBS), this will be arranged by the college following interview.
EquipmentAs part of the course you will need:
• Folders, pens, paper and course textbooks
• Placement T-shirt (approx. £10)
• A clear DBS check
Attendance1 year, full time to complete the full BTEC Foundation Diploma in Health and Social Care, early exit after one year would complete the BTEC Foundation Diploma size qualification only. Excellent attendance is required both in College and in the practical placement. Learners are required to attend all lectures. Progression is based on having excellent attendance.
AssessmentYou will be assessed via coursework, written exams and in work placement settings.
ProgressionProgression onto Year 2 BTEC Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care. There are a variety of potential careers that you can explore as the qualification enables you to apply for employment, higher education and apprenticeships. It is possible for you to progress into careers that require further training as this qualification holds a maximum of 420 UCAS points, allowing you to progress into a range of Higher Education courses such as Nursing, Midwifery, Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, Speech and Language Therapist, Occupational Therapist etc.
