IntroductionThe BTEC First Extended Certificate is a practical, work-related course. You learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. It introduces you to the employment area you have chosen and provides a good basis to go on to a more advanced work-related qualification. A BTEC First Diploma is equivalent to three GCSE grades A*-C and is normally taken as a full-time course.
Study OutlineAll students take the 10 units: Human Lifespan Development; Health and Social Care Values; Effective Communication in Health & Social Care; Promoting Health and Wellbeing; The Impact of Diet on Health and Wellbeing; Equality and Diversity in Health and Social Care; Healthy Living; Human Body Systems and Care of Disorders; Creative and Therapeutic Activities in Health & Social Care and The Health and Social Care sector
Entry RequirementsYou will normally need at least one of the following: A BTEC Foundation Certificate in a related subject at Merit/Distinction; three GCSEs at grades A-D (or equivalent); related work experience. An enhanced DBS check (Police check).
EquipmentNo specialist equipment is required
AttendanceOne year, full-time
AssessmentEight units are assessed and graded and two units are exams, an overall grade for the qualification is awarded.
ProgressionWith further training or study to level 3 and university, students go on to careers such as nursing, social work and residential care management. If you want to enter into work straight after this course, you could work in registered care homes, hospitals, nursing homes or health centres.
