IntroductionThis is a CPCAB Validated Course (the only validating body specifically for counselling and psychotherapy), and employers in the caring professions are increasingly asking for this kind of qualification. The course is focused on the practical use of skills. It can be taken as the first step on a four stage training process for professional counselling, or as a stand-alone course.
Study OutlineThe content is based on the Person Centred approach to helping. The course is practical and participative, and personal development is an important aspect of the course, as is self-reflection. A listening skills placement is recommended but not required.
Entry RequirementsA certificate or award at an introductory level. A successful interview with counselling lecturer.
EquipmentA recording device is essential.
Attendance30 weeks, 3 hour session per week over one academic year. Evenings, 6.00pm - 9.00pm
AssessmentAssessment is ongoing throughout the course by your tutor, peers and yourself. There will be audio recording and evaluations demonstrating the use of counselling skills. In addition, written assignments and a short external exam will be completed. Students are required to keep a weekly reflective learning review capturing their experiences.
ProgressionThis course can be taken as a stand-alone course or as a progression route towards more intensive training in counselling subject to entry requirements and interview. Students are recommended to visit www.cpcab.co.uk to view the full syllabus.
