IntroductionThis study programme will enable learners to gain an insight into the basic bricklaying techniques, skills and terminology used by a bricklayer, including the science, technology, engineering, maths and principles that are applied within the construction industry on a daily basis.
Study OutlineOn this study programme learners will study: Health & Safety regulations and requirements; Communication and structures within the construction industry; Building knowledge and construction technology. Learners will also carry out basic block and bricklaying skills and cavity walling projects. Setting out skills for masonry structures are combined within the practical projects undertaken. As part of this study programme learners are required to attend English and maths functional skills lessons.
Entry RequirementsEntry requirements are ideally GCSEs Grade E or above and through initial diagnostic assessment a result of Entry 3 should be achieved. Learners will also have to attend an interview with a member of the construction team.
EquipmentLearners will require stationary equipment, details of which will be given by the tutor. Suitable safety footwear and overalls along with items of personal protective equipment(PPE) will be required (Yellow Hi-Viz vest and eye protection).
AttendanceLearners will be required to attend 3 days per week and it is compulsory to attend all sessions, including English and maths functional skills. The attendance rate expected for the year is 95%. Work experience opportunities will be arranged for this study programme with must be attended. these will give you an awareness to the employability skills required for work in the construction sector.
AssessmentAssessment is ongoing via completion of coursework and portfolio and awarding body set examinations.
ProgressionSuccessful completion of the study programme could lead onto the Diploma Level 2 Bricklaying course, into a intermediate trowel apprenticeship or into employment. To progress in college there is an expectation that you have excellent attendance, attitude and behavior record.
