Why Choose SLC?
Last updated: Tuesday 17th February 2015
We put learning teaching and assessment at the heart of everything we do. Learning, teaching and assessment is our core business. All college staff are challenged to contribute to students’ success. Ofsted 2013 said, “Tutors are enthusiastic and use their skills and commercial experience effectively to develop learner’s skills”.
SLC is a state-of-the art £43 million facility with a purpose-built hair salon, beauty and holistic therapies suite, engineering and construction workshops and TV and radio studios to support curriculum delivery. There is a well-stocked Library you may access a wide range of resources including books and e-books, newspapers and journals, DVDs and CDs. There are Wi-Fi enabled PCs throughout the college and all students have secure access to the SLC computer network . In addition, you may borrow laptops to help them with their studies.
To enhance the student experience, there is a well-equipped gym, a boxing gym, a student lounge where students may relax and socialise, a refectory and coffee bar for you to take advantage of.
The added facilities on-site create a great learning environment for school leaver. The range of facilities we offer our students both supports your studies and enriches your college life.
Construction and Engineering Workshops
The Construction and Engineering workshops are bespoke training facilities which replicate the real life working environment in both these industries. The kit and materials are industry-standard.
Our salon creates the perfect learning environment for our hairdressing students and helps to prepare them for the working environment they wish to enter. Students, staff, parents and members of the community can try one of our treatments at a fraction of the price and indulge in a new hair style.
The fantastic facilities in the therapies suite include a dry flotation tank, sauna and steam room. The suite enables students to develop in-depth knowledge of the industry along with practical skills. These facilities are also open to students, staff, parents and members of the community who would like to experience a range of beauty treatments, such as facials and massages.
TV and Radio Suites
The TV and radio suites create a real life working environment for our media students. Each year there is an opportunity for students across the college to take part in presenting on our college radio station wiggle FM and to take part in exciting projects to create videos for the college YouTube channel.
Every year many of our students progress in to full-time employment after completing a vocational qualification at SLC. The vocational structure of our courses prepares you for the ever competitive job market. It is a mandatory requirement for all full-time students to take part in a work placement, offering valuable experience in the work place for our students that compliments the skills learnt in the class room.
SLC, as a college, plays an important role in our local community and for our students. By offering courses at a range of levels this allows you to start studying at a level best suited to you. With our ever expanding portfolio of professional and University level courses to choose from, you can progress onto higher level qualifications and achieve your future careers goals, right here at your local college.
Taking part in skills competitions are very much a part of the learning experience here at SLC. Preparation for competitions develops the wider skills which are important for developing both self-confidence and employability. We have a yearly programme of local, regional, national and international competitions linked to WorldSkills.
