The Corporation currently comprises 11 governors from a variety of backgrounds whose experience, knowledge, skills and strategic leadership make a vital contribution to the College’s continuing development. The College Principal & Chief Executive, two members of staff and two students (who are elected annually) are all members of the Corporation.
The legal power of our Corporation rests with the Corporation and not with individual Members. Therefore:

We are volunteers and are not paid.
On appointment we must declare any convictions, bankruptcy proceedings, and any financial and non-financial interests we have. These interests are recorded in a register of Members’ Interests which is available for public scrutiny.

Vacancy, Student Governor
I am currently Chief Executive of The Y (Leicester YMCA) which is one of the largest youth organisations in the city, providing Housing, Education, Arts, Sports and IAG. Prior to this I was head of young people's services in Camden London and an area youth officer in Birmingham. I am also a serving magistrate and previously sat as a member of the Leicestershire Police Authority. In my personal life I have 4 children and enjoy exotic holidays, salsa dancing, films and funk and soul music.
I am currently the Director of Student Services at Coventry University where I am responsible for the strategic development and delivery of a wide range of academic, commercial and specialist support services for students. I have extensive experience in both Adult and Further Education, having taught at Leicester University, New College Nottingham and Leicester College where I was a Principal Lecturer in Psychology. I was also the Chief Examiner for GCSE Psychology for the Oxford and Cambridge Regional Examinations Board for ten years and am the senior co-author of ‘Psychology for You’ a textbook for GCSE students.
In my spare time I enjoy walking in the countryside and mountain biking with my son.

I’ve been a Governor at SLC since November 2014. I’m a CIM qualified marketer and have nearly 20 years experience of delivering publicly funded business support and skills improvement programmes that create jobs, generate wealth and help individuals fulfil their potential. During this time, I’ve worked with national Government and its agencies, local authorities and Local Enterprise Partnerships and have a very strong understanding of both policy and operational delivery including how to effectively engage employers. This gives context to my role as a Governor.
I began my career in the education sector, firstly as a Research Assistant and then as HE lecturer and later worked for the National Trust, being part of the senior management team for the Northumbria Region with a focus on commercial income generation. I went on to become one of the founding directors of the EMB Group, which is headquartered in Leicester and is the company I currently work for. Since 2006 we’ve delivered over 100 substantial programmes and projects. These include UK Trade & Investment international trade services, LSC/SFA funded skills programmes such as Train to Gain and the Leadership & Management Advice Service, Investors in People for UKCES and Business Link. EMB is also a well recognised specialist in securing and managing complex EU funded projects.
Toni Fazaeli, Chair of the Corporation
I have held several senior roles in education, including as the Chief Executive of the Institute for Learning (IfL), the professional body for teachers and trainers across Further Education and Skills. I am a commissioner for the National Skills Commission. Before joining IfL in 2008, I was a Senior Civil Servant with policy responsibilities for Further Education, was a national director for quality and standards at the Learning and Skills Council, and for seven years I was an inspector in the Further Education Funding Council (FEFC) specialising in literacy, numeracy, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and humanities across further and adult education. I was an adult education adviser and officer in Leicestershire Local Education Authority and a development officer with NIACE. As a qualified teacher, I have taught in prisons, further and adult education, as well as schools. I am also co-founder and the chair of a local social enterprise, Learning for the Fourth Age.
I am a non-executive director of a precision engineering company since April 2012. I qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1974 and worked for Chartered Accountants practices until 1981 gaining auditing, accounting and specialist experience. I moved to industry working for companies varying in size from small family to large international companies. I have been a governor of SLC since July 2011 and Chair the Audit Committee.
Marion Plant OBE, Principal and Chief Executive
I am passionate about skills and an ambassador for further education. I am committed to working in partnership with employers to ensure that colleges deliver the skills training that industry needs today and in the future.
As board member, I am responsible for Skills on the Board of the Leicester and Leicestershire Local Enterprise Partnership and the Chair of the Employment and Skills Group for the Coventry and Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership.
I have been the Principal and Chief Executive of North Warwickshire & Hinckley College since 2004 and in February 2013 was appointed as Principal of North Warwickshire & Hinckley College and South Leicestershire College, and Chief Executive of the newly formed federation between the two colleges. I am also Chief Executive of the Midland Academies Trust (MAT), a rapidly expanding academies chain.
The Federation between North Warwickshire & Hinckley College and South Leicestershire College is a ground breaking initiative aimed at driving up quality and standards and reducing costs at both colleges. The report from the recent Ofsted inspection at South Leicestershire College cites significant improvements at the college since I was appointed Principal and Chief Executive and the Federation was created. The two colleges are on track to save £2million over two years through this partnership.
North Warwickshire & Hinckley College has been graded as Outstanding by Ofsted during my leadership. Under my direction, the college has significantly improved success rates, this year reaching 90% (6.1% above national benchmark).
Committed to raising expectations and achievements, I pursue a relentless drive for excellence among students and staff. My services to further education were recognised when I was awarded an OBE in the 2009 Queen’s Birthday Honours List.
I serve on several national and regional bodies, which include being a Trustee of the Edge Foundation, a Board member of the Church of England Board of Education, Co-Chair of Faith and Beliefs in FE (fbfe).
I pro-actively support skills competitions as a strategy to raise student ambition and achievement, and am a Director of the Skills Show, Chair of the Premier College Group and Chair of the national AoC WorldSkills Portfolio Group. My championing of skills competitions nationally and internationally has led to many colleges successfully embedding competitions into their teaching and learning strategies.
Before moving into education, I worked for the Health Service.
Suzanne Powell, Support Staff Governor
I came to South Leicestershire College in 2002 as a student to enable my progression onto University. After serving as Treasurer on the Students’ Union and as a Student Governor on the Corporation I went on to take up a staff position in the Additional Support Team whilst continuing my studies at the University of Leicester.
My current role is as a Vocational Mentor supporting learners on Foundation and Pre-employment courses although I have also undertaken other responsibilities within the department including managing the gym, developing the attendance procedure and delivering tutorials in Health and Wellbeing.
My experience as a learner at South Leicestershire College underpins my belief that all members of staff must work together to enhance the learner journey. As a Governor, I intend to focus on how we can improve the quality of our provision and secure the future of South Leicestershire College in an increasingly competitive market.
Melanie Proffitt MBA FCCA
I am a qualified accountant, with an MBA from Warwick Business School and a postgraduate diploma in Sales & Marketing from the Chartered Institute of Marketing. My experience encompasses General, Commercial and Finance Management, across a range of market sectors, including Healthcare, Print and Packaging, Automotive and Heavy Engineering.
My most recent permanent role was as the General Manager for a specialist healthcare centre, based on Harley Street, where I had full commercial and operational responsibility for the centre. My objective was to turnaround an under-performing business, and set and deliver a strategy for growth.
I have also been the Divisional Financial Director for a large multinational packaging company. This involved multi-site responsibility ensuring all statutory controls were being adhered to, whilst monitoring performance against a stringent budget, as margins were particularly tight.
I am passionate about supporting and engaging with my professional body; from 2008 to 2010 I was President of the Leicestershire ACCA Network and continue to serve on the ACCA panel. In May 2012 we were awarded the ACCA UK Innovation Award for the new Network and Develop format that we implemented.
As a consultant, I have worked for Skills for Logistics, a sector skills council for the logistics industry whose vision is to deliver the best skilled and most productive logistics workforce in the world.
I have strong leadership skills, successfully leading and developing all my teams, I’ve enjoyed helping my staff realise their full potential, often encouraging them to supplement their work experience with further education. I have the creative ability to positively influence and drive strategy, I will challenge the status quo, think outside of the box, and continually question. It is with these skills that I hope to help SLC meet the challenges ahead.
I am the Chief Executive of Phoenix - a charity that runs a popular programme of world cinema, digital arts, education, and business activities at Phoenix Square in Leicester.
I have been a Governor since 2009.
Before joining Phoenix in 2010, my career included management and leadership roles in higher education specialising in enterprise, research, business and economic development in many sectors. I have experience in leadership and governance roles in a number of “not-for-profit” organisations that promote environmental stewardship, student enterprise, skills and business creation.
I have lived and worked in Leicester since 1986 and I am a member of the Institute of Directors.

Sally Brook Shanahan, Clerk to the Corporation
I have been admitted as a solicitor since 1984 and spent 25 years working in the coal industry and, post-privatisation, as the head of the legal department and company secretary of the regulator.
After my early retirement in 2011 I took a part-time position as Clerk to the Corporation at New College Stamford and will continue to undertake that role alongside my role as part-time Clerk at SLC.
Outside work I am active in the community as a trustee of Rutland Agricultural Society and my local village hall. I also raise funds for LOROS as a member of their Special Events committee and visit organisations on behalf of the Henry Smith Charity where an application for a grant has been made and make recommendations to the Trustees.
