SLC's Additional Support Department is based on the first floor at the main South Wigston campus, opposite The Lounge and very close to The Eating Place. We provide support to students across the college in a variety of ways and we strive to be as inclusive as possible. We know from experience that our services need to be easily accessible, adaptable and tailored to the individual. We put the learner first and this is at the core of our team ethos and focus. We currently support nearly 600 learners who access one or more of our services.

Counselling and Mental Health Support
Counselling is a confidential, non judgemental environment to explore thoughts, feelings and emotions and gain a better understanding of yourself. We offer this service free to all students, or can offer support to students with Mental Health Difficulties who feel they need support but not counselling. Referral forms are available in the Additional Support Office.
The Student Liaison and Enrichment Team provide a wide range of enrichment activities, recreational sports, trips and parties and facilitate various Student Union activities. There are also many opportunities to be involved in fundraising events. This service is led by the students so if you have any further ideas for activities, let us hear them! Feel free to call into the Additional Support office to find out more.
When you have enrolled at the college, you can also purchase an NUS Extra card online at nusextra.co.uk, to qualify for discounts at various shops and theme parks etc.
Health & Wellbeing
Your Health & Wellbeing matters to us here at SLC and we host numerous activities and tutorials to offer information and advice about Health & Wellbeing issues including help to stop smoking, sexual health advice, drug/alcohol support.
Learning coaches provide support to learners with learning difficulties and disabilities within the classroom. This is wide ranging support and can help with personal care, behaviour and social skills, just keeping you on track or any other identified support needs.
We have a pastoral lead advisor who will support you at times of crisis, this could be in your personal life or if you are feeling that things are too much at college.
The team of Progress Coaches work with full-time students at the point of recruitment and for the duration of their time at college. They work closely with key curriculum areas to equip a case load of students with the skills and attributes required to allow them to successfully achieve their full potential and be ready for their progression. On top of this Progress Coaches deliver group tutorials on a variety of issues including drug awareness and sexual health, as well as working with students on a one to one basis. It is the role of the Progress Coach to identify and support students with attendance, behavioural and personal issues. Progress coaches are at the forefront of the system of support and pastoral care at the college and will take the primary initiative in dealing with students’ problems.
The team work alongside student groups such as Student Ambassadors, Course Representatives and Student Union and Council. If you would like to get involved, pop into The Lounge and talk to one of the Student Liaison Team.
