WHAT ARE APPRENTICESHIPS?
Apprenticeships allow you to work and earn, at the same time as learning new skills that will lead to nationally recognised qualifications.
As an Apprentice you'll work alongside experienced staff to gain job-specific skills either delivered at an SLC campus (on day or block release) or entirely in the workplace "on the job".
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS TO YOU?
Getting paid while you learn might sound too good to be true - but as an Apprentice that's exactly what you'll do. Combine the hands-on experience of working with the qualifications you'll gain by studying for the best of both worlds. You will benefit from:
- Earning a wage
- Enhanced career prospects
- Support during training
- Real 'hands-on' work experience
DO I HAVE TO PAY ANYTHING TO BECOME AN APPRENTICE?
No. Whilst you are on an Apprenticeship, your employer pays you a salary and supports you whilst you undertake your training - much of which is in the work place but some of which may take place at college. The full cost of your training is met through government funding if you are aged 16-18. For apprentices aged 19 or over, their employer is expected to contribute towards the cost of the training.
| Framework | QCF Level | Typically Includes |
|---|---|---|
| Apprenticeship | 2 | Level 2 Competence Level 2 Technical Skills at Level 1 and Level 2 |
| Advanced Apprenticeship | 3 | Level 3 Competence Level 3 Technical Skills at Level 2 and Level 3 |
| Higher Apprenticeship | 4 | Level 4 Competence Level 4 Technical with Skills at Level 3 |
Different Apprenticeships will have different entry requirements and you will need to discuss this with us and your employer.
We offer Apprenticeships in:
- Business Administration
- Business Improvement Techniques
- Carpentry and Joinery
- Childcare
- Cleaning and Support Services
- Construction
- Customer Service

An Apprenticeship not only trains you in the skills employers want, it also opens up further career and learning opportunities. You can carry on working, do more advanced training or even go on to higher education.
